Embracing Intentional Vitality

Are you familiar with “intentional vitality”? What is it, exactly? Intentional vitality, though it may seem complex, is actually quite simple. It's about making the choice, every day, to live a vibrant life supported by healthy choices. It's a straightforward concept that can have a profound impact on our lives.

Every day, we’re pulled in multiple directions. We have professional obligations, family commitments, and friendships to maintain. We have promises to ourselves that we want to keep—health and fitness goals, hobbies, and volunteer projects. No matter what fills our plates, we make daily choices about how to work toward our personal goals—or not.

What are some things you can do to cultivate intentional vitality in your life?

Cultivating intentional vitality comes down to consciously creating habits and making choices that promote physical, mental and emotional well-being and avoiding the choices that are detrimental to our health. Here are some strategies you can use to cultivate intentional vitality in your life:

  • Make physical health a priority: American culture doesn’t always make choosing physical health easy. We constantly face temptations such as fast food or a Netflix binge. Try to move your body daily, choose healthy foods, and see your doctor regularly. Remember, go for consistency, not perfection.

  • Take care of your mental and emotional well-being: Managing your stress levels is just as important as your physical health. You have to find what works best for you when it comes to your mental and emotional well-being. For some people, it’s mindfulness and meditation. For others, it’s practicing gratitude or maintaining social connections.

  • Find purpose: Why do you want to maintain the vitality in your life? Is it to meet personal goals? Is it to be there for your family? Figure out what has meaning for you, and keep your purpose in mind when it gets tough to make the decisions that support your vitality.

  • Set your environment up for success: We don’t rise to the level of our goals. We fall to the level of our systems. Does your environment support your effort to cultivate intentional vitality? Change your environment to support your efforts to live with vitality.

  • Seek balance: Remember, not every day is easy. Some days, making healthy choices feels great and seems simple. Other times, life gets in the way. If you fall off the wagon, get back on as soon as possible. As long as you do your best to keep returning to intentionality, good things will follow.
